NaijaNews.com just confirmed the death of a NairaBet agent who committed suicide over inability to pay a customer who supposedly won N600,000 in the sports bet.

Further inquiries revealed that the deceased was discovered on Wednesday by residents of Obadeyi Ajala, dangling from a rope in an uncompleted shop at Ajala bus stop, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

As people gathered at the scene to witness the incident, a girlfriend of the unidentified agent who is said to work at a petrol station reportedly arrived the scheme but fainted on sighting the dead body.

The lady was revived by sympathetic bystanders and one of them, Monday Gabriel, told correspondents that the lady gave an account of what could have prompted him to commit suicide.

“As we wondered what could have made him kill himself, a lady, who later identified herself as his girlfriend, arrived at the scene and fainted on sighting the corpse. We poured water on her.

“When she regained consciousness, she told us that the man sent her a text message yesterday (Tuesday), saying he wanted to commit suicide. She said she called his line, but he didn’t pick his calls.

“According to the girlfriend, the late man had a NairaBet shop. One of the customers won N600,000, but he has not paid him.

“But the lady was later taken away from the scheme on a motorcycle.”

Another eyewitness said Policemen from the Ijaiye division came to remove the corpse. The witness who is conversant with how online betting operates disclosed that agents pay winners with money received from NairaBet management. Here’s his statement.

“If it is true that he was owing a customer N600,000, he must have received the money from the NairaBet management and used it for something else. I also play NairaBet and whenever I win, the agent I patronise pays me the moment the company credits his account.

“The company doesn’t owe the agents, but some of them play smart at times when customers win big money.”

This was also confirmed by an official of NairaBet Contact Centre, who gave her name only as Chidika. She said every agent has his own personal business as a partner with NairaBet whom they share the commission with on a monthly or weekly basis.

The official said the company is not aware of the suicide incident which she believed could have been triggered by an understanding the late agent had with the customer or other matters.

More suicide cases have been reported since the beginning of the recession in 2016, and 2017 made it worse as more cases are being reported by the Nigerian media.
