Sheikh Abubakar Maikano is the Chief Imam of Al-Qalam University, which is owned by the Katsina state government.

On Friday, January 6, 2017, while giving his sermon, Sheikh Maikano called on civil servants in Katsina to reject the usury loans secured for them by the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC).

Giving his reasons for the instruction, Maikano said the loan would be given with interests, which is ‘usury’ that Islam has forbidden.

Quoting verses of the Quran, to back up his point, Maikano pointed out where Allah forbade Muslim faithful from taking anything that has to do with usury.

One verse he quoted in particular was this: ‘’Allah cursed giver, collector, witness and writer of usury.”

The Chief Imam then urged government ministries, departments, and agencies not to stand as guarantors to any civil servant.

He also urged the NLC leadership to rescind their decision and instead look for other ways to help people that have no usury or interest.

He said: ‘’We know that people are in need of help, but you cannot use what is forbidden to assist a person. Allah will not bless money that is mixed with usury.”

He said interest free loans have been provided before. ‘’This was done in the past by the previous governments. ‘’We also want this government to do the same thing for its civil servants in the state,” he said.
