Manchester United Trashed Sunderland 3–1

David Moyes’s return to Old Trafford got him spanked as his Sunderland side were slammed 3-1 by the rampaging Manchester United at Old Trafford this evening.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho dropped Wayne Rooney as he felt a little pain in training on the eve of match-day but there was a place on the bench for returnees Eric Bailey and Henrikh Mkhitaryan while David Moyes stuck with the front pairing of Jermaine Defoe and Victor Anichebe.

First Half

Manchester United dominated possession in front of home fans and it was football’s most expensive player Paul Pogba that tested Jordan Pickford in goal for the away side but the goalkeeper did well to beat the ball away for a corner.

There was an early injury scare for David Moyes’s side as striker Victor Anichebe landed awkwardly after an ariel challenge but after treatment he was back on his fit.

At the other end Daley Blind picked up a yellow card for a foul on Anichebe and Van Aanholt drew out a good save from David de Gea as the visitors searched for a breakthrough.

Paul Pogba nearly found a way as he curled a right foot shot past the Sunderland keeper but it came of the post as the Black Cats escaped. The Frenchman tried another effort from 25yards but it was easily saved by Pickford.

However, the goalkeeper couldn’t do anything as Zlatan Ibrahimovic laid off a pass for Daley Blind who shoots past the goal keeper to give Jose Mourinho’s men the lead.

Juan Mata won a freekick at the edge of the penalty box and took the resultant kick but the goalkeeper made a fantastic save as the half ended 1-0 in favour of the Red Devils.

Second Half

Manchester United continued their dominance in the second period as they controlled possession and denied their opponents time on the ball.

Pogba tested the keeper with 30 seconds but it was an easy save for Pickford. He also thwarted an effort from Juan Mata as he kept the scores same.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan replaced the very quiet Jesse Lingard and he wasted no time in getting into the thick of action – the Armenian played in Ander Herrera who slid the ball into the path of Ibrahimovic and with just the goalkeeper to beat – the big Swede failed to get the ball past Pickford.

However, the home side eventually got the second goal as Zlatan Ibrahimovic having missed a glorious chance took the next with aplomb as he finished past Pickford to double the home side’s lead.

With a comfortable lead, Mourinho threw on Marouane Fellaini for Herrera but the Belgian had barely settled when Mkhitaryan produced a moment of magic to score the third goal for Manchester United while Fabio Borini netted a consolation goal for the away side as the match ended 3-1.
