Solomon Dalung, Nigeria’s Minister for Youths and Sports Development, has explained that no human is above mistake hence, the error he made by saying spended when he actually meant to say ‘expended’.

While Nigerians were still grappling with his confession that his ministry didn’t make provisions for the Super Falcons simply because he hadn’t thought they could win, his latest gaffe has to do with grammatical blunder — the sort that could make his child in the Junior Secondary School wonder who is correct between daddy and his teacher!

In a video which was posted by Channels Television some days ago, the sports minister in a desperate effort to deny corruption allegations brought against his ministry, said:

“The funds spended were properly spended because we got them from intervention funds from Mr. President.”

A grammatical slip which set the internet on fire.e it lightly condemned the minister for lack of competence, while others described the error as ‘shameful’.

Responding to the harsh criticism, Solomon Dalung took to his Facebook foundation page to thank his critics, insisting that no one is above mistakes.
“Expended was the word intended. Flip-flops are part of human nature, anyone can, anyone does and that’s what reminds us even deeper of our humanness. Thank you for the observations.”

It is actually a well-known fact that we all are subject to making a slip of the tongue but when one person falls victim of grammatical errors too often then…. This is not the first time the minister had been under fire for such error.

Recall that in August, while trying to defend coach Samson Siasia and the Dream Team VI’s predicament ahead of the Olympics, Dalung mistakenly referred to Nigeria as ‘United States of Nigeria’. He had said:

“Our U-23 team are suffering in the United States of Nigeria.”
