Alkali Mohammed, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), was killed by suspected hoodlums in the Omoku area of Rivers state, on Saturday.
Mohammed’s orderly, who was with him at the time of the unfortunate incident, was also killed.
Kasimu Abdulkarim, commander of 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, disclosed this in a statement.
He said the attackers laid ambush for the deceased officers, who were on duty during the legislative rerun exercise.
Abdulkarim added that while three policemen escaped, five officers had been declared missing.
There was widespread violence during the election.
