#ASUUStrikeUpdate: See Universities That Have Voted To Suspend Strike

More details have emerged on the reason the Federal Government quickly reversed its directive to Vice Chancellors to immediately re-open all public Universities and allow students to go back to classes.

Naija News reported that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had directed vice-chancellors, Chairmen of Governing Councils and Pro-Chancellors to reopen public Universities for the resumption of lectures.

In another circular issued on Monday evening, the commission said it has withdrawn the circular earlier issued ordering the reopening of Federal universities.

The circular was signed by NUC Director, Finance and Accounts, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the commission’s Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

I have been directed to withdraw the National Universities Commission (NUC) circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol64/135, dated 23rd September 2022 on the above subject. Consequently, the said circular stands withdrawn.

All Pro-chancellors and Chairmen of Governing Councils, as well as vice-chancellors of the federal universities, are to please, note.

“Further development and information would be communicated to all relevant stakeholders. Please accept the assurances of the Executive Secretary’s warmest regards,” the circular reads.

Naija News learned that the NUC withdrew the circular because of the pressure mounted on the government by opinion leaders and other stakeholders interested in resolving the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.

A senior official in the Ministry of Education, who craved anonymity, told reporters that the circular was stepped down to allow for more negotiation between the government and ASUU leadership.

He said: “The circular was withdrawn to allow for more negotiation between the government and the ASUU following the ongoing invention by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
