PDP Crisis: 'How NWC Forced Ayu To Step Down As National Chairman'

The Special Adviser to the National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu, Simon Imobo Tswam has reacted to the call for his principal to resign from office.

The camp of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike in its grievances against northern dominance in the party had called for Ayu to resign from office.

Governor Wike’s camp claimed that Ayu had promised to resign from office if a northerner emerges as the presidential candidate of PDP.

Tswam, however, in an interview with Tribune claimed that his principal never signed an agreement to resign from office.

According to Tswam, what Ayu said before his emergence as National Chairman of PDP was that, “if a candidate emerges from the North and the party said he should step down based on the issue of balance, he will step down.”

Tswam asked if the party had requested the resignation of Ayu, adding that the party at the last National Executive Council meeting passed a vote of confidence on him.

The aide of the PDP National Chairman noted that the resignation of Agu would throw the party into a constitutional crisis.

He added that if Ayu agrees to resign from office, he would have to hand over to the Deputy Chairman North, Illya Damagu.

Tswam said nothing would change because according to the constitution of the party a northerner will still take over.

He said the only way another region will take over is if another convention is held by the party.

Tswam stated that PDP should focus on winning the 2023 elections and not think of forming a convention committee.
