Nasarawa State Records 18,429 Hepatitis Positive Cases, Targets Treating 124,000 In 5Yrs

As the World marks Hepatitis day, Commissioner for Health in Nasarawa state, Ahmed Yahaya, yesterday Thursday, in Lafia said, the state has a record of 181, 946 persons who have tested positive for hepatitis infection.

Mr. Yahaya said the Nasarawa state government is committed to eliminating viral hepatitis through the implementation of a five-year strategic plan with a target of treating 124,000 persons.

The commissioner said Hepatitis is a serious health challenge globally and today’s date was set aside by the World Health Organization (WHO) to recognize it, with the theme “Bringing Hepatitis Care Closer to You”

“It is commemorated every 28th day of July in order to increase its visibility and attract more resources to battle it as well as to bring succor to the people affected.”

The Commissioner said the state had designated areas across the 13 Local Government Areas for mass community screening and called on residents to avail themselves to the screening.

He advised members of the public to avoid the use of unsterilised sharp objects, sharing of needles, syringes, and the transfusion of unscreened blood and blood products.
