Nigeria Vs Tunisia: Eguavoen ‘Steps Down’ After AFCON 2021 Exit

Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from his position.

The former player had led Nigerian national team to the ongoing 2021 African Cup of Nation, AFCON tournament in Cameroon.

However, the Super Eagles got kicked out of the competition on Sunday night after losing to Tunisia in daring 1 goal down.

Naija News reports that Eguavoen had led the three-time champions to three straight wins against Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau in the group stage.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Eguavoen said, “What happens next is that I’m the interim coach and Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“I will go back to my position and allow the NFF (to) make a decision on the way forward,” Eguavoen said after the match.

Recall that Eguavoen took over coaching of the Super Eagles after Gernot Rohr was sacked.

Meanwhile, former Presidential candidate, Kingsley Moghalu, has charged Nigerians not to blame President Muhammadu Buhari for the defeat of the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Following the disappointment experience yesterday after Tunisia sent Super Eagles out of 2021 AFCON, Nigerians took to social media platforms to blame the loss on President Buhari’s video call with the Super Eagles earlier before the match.

While others blamed Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, for the defeat.

Moghalu in his reaction to the development took to his Twitter account and wrote, “NGSuperEagles lost to Tunisia. Period. It’s not because President @MBuhari called them.

“Let’s not be superstitious, please. I’m sad though.”
