Oke-Ogun Polytechnic ASUP Refuse To Call Off Strike, Demand Payment Of 18-Months Salary

The academic staff union of Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, Oyo State have raised alarm over a threat by the institution’s governing council to sack them staff despite the fact that the Abiola Ajimobi led government of Oyo state was owning the workers about 18 months Salary.

According to a communique by the governing council the workers were ordered to resume work immediately or lose their jobs, an order which was rebuffed by the workers.

Naija News recalls that the academic staff of the Polytechnic (ASUP) proceeded on a strike action alongside their counterparts across the state-owned institutions on August 28, after waiting endlessly for their salaries for almost two years.

The union based their agitation on poor welfare and non-payment of their salary arrears of several months.

Governing council threatens to sack the workers.

In a bid to force the workers to resume, the governing council, ordered the academic staff of the institution to resume work immediately, it also directed the management of the institution to open a central register for academic staff to sign as from Monday, Sept. 10 and said the register should close by 4 p.m.

Workers rejects councils’s order.

The Academic staff of the polytechnic however refused to yield to the pressure from the state government to resume as it planned to proceed on a peaceful protest on Monday, Sept. 10, the was however aborted for security reasons.

Despite not proceeding on the protest the workers still displayed some placards within the institution to express their displeasure over the unpaid salaries and threat to sack them, some of the placards carried captions like; “Ajimobi should priorities education in Oyo state”,”Don’t make us a laughing stock, pay our salaries”, “We say no to commercialization of tertiary institutions in Oyo state”, “Proscription of ASUP is ungodly and inhuman“, and many more.

The Polytechnic union said that the action of the coucil by implication “portray Oyo state government in bad light in the eyes of the public“.

ASUP condemns governing councils’ acts, makes demand.

The academic staff of the Polytechnic today, Monday 10, released a statement condemning the actions of the councils and describing it as outdated, humiliating, degrading, Archaic, ex-communicating, barbaric, embarrassing, dictatorial, provocative and undemocratic.

The workers demanded an outright payment of all outstanding arrears forthwith 10 months of unremitted cooperative deductions and 7 moths of full salary which is equivalent of 11 month’s salary.
