Twenty-five thousand police officers have been deployed by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Idris Abubakar for this Saturday’s rerun election in Rivers state.
This was disclosed by the Rivers state Commissioner of Police, CP Francis Odesanya, at a meeting held with stakeholders in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
CP Odesanya said the twenty-five thousand police officers deployed for the election include: conventional, Police mobile, police marine, police air wing and other tactical units.
CP Odesanya also warned that the Police will not hesitate to clampdown on any individual found with arms.
He stated that the security detail of all Politicians and VIPs in the the state will be withdrawn on the eve of the election, adding that any Police officer found with a politician will be dealt with.
“The IGP Idris Kpotun has been magnanimous enough to approve the deployment of 25,000 policemen including Special tactical unit and Anti terrorism squad for the election to offer protection to both the state and outside the state.
“This is one election the Police is taking very seriously. Police officers deployed from the Force Headquarters and other states are already arriving the state in readiness for the election.
“The Police will not hesitate to do perform is professional duty. We must get the conduct of election right this time in Rivers state.
“Recall that the last election was marred by wide range of violence in the stats which resulted in the cancellation of some of the results in the election.
“Let me assure you that the Police will not give room for anymore laxity over elections in this state. The Police will not fold it’s arms and watch criminal elements hijack the process and scuttle it.
“Nobody, no matter how highly placed will be allowed to carry fire arms on election day. Let me also say that all Police officers attached to Politicians will be withdrawn before election day and will be returned only after election,” he said.
The Rivers State Police Command said it will ensure strict adherence to the electoral laws of the country.
